Shady Rest Country Club, located in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, opened in1920 as the first African American Golf and Country Club in the United States. The country club was home to John Matthew Shippen Jr., the first American Born African American Golf Professional and has hosted Jazz and Blues Legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington.
Through a coordinated effort driven by the National Pan-Hellenic Council of Central Jersey, and chaired by Phi Eta Omega, the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., are joining forces with the Divine Nine to support the Preserve Shady Rest Committee's efforts to preserve and restore the historic significance of Shady Rest.
Our nine organizations have formed teams to collect donations to be presented to the Preserve Shady Rest Committee on Juneteenth 2023. Please support us with a donation so we can achieve our our sorority goal of raising $1,908 toward our campaign goal of $5,000 by May 31, 2023. Chapter checks can be payable to the National Pan-Hellenic Council of Central Jersey and mailed to PO Box 84, Plainfield, NJ 07060.
All donations are welcome and you do not have to be a member of the Divine Nine to participate. Just pick a team you'd like to support or feel free to create your own. Help us preserve this important part of American History, New Jersey History and Black History with your donation.
