Phi Eta Omega Observes MLK Day of Service

The Phi Eta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA) held its annual dignity drive, donating, collecting, packing, and distributing feminine hygiene products to unhoused women across Union County.

More than 40 volunteers, including sorority members, Councilwoman Elizabeth Stamler and Assemblywoman Linda Carter, gathered at the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA to sort and pack 11,648 items that were delivered to Raphael’s Life House, serving young moms ages 21 and under, and the YWCA of Eastern Union County’s Residential Program, providing emergency shelter and transitional housing for women and children in need.

“We started our annual dignity drive two years ago when we learned that feminine hygiene products were among the most needed items for unhoused women from the shelters and community partners we worked with,” explained Liz Nolley Tillman, president of the AKA chapter. “Given that our chapter was chartered right here in Scotch Plains, it was only natural that we would focus this year’s MLK Day of Service activity on addressing this critical need in our community.”

On February 4, from 10 am to noon, the AKA chapter will host “Unplugged,” an interactive mindfulness event featuring music, games, meditation and other activities designed to help attendees reconnect, relax and rest. Offered in conjunction with the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign, the event is open to area families and children of all ages. There is no fee to attend but registration is required.  Register at https://bit.ly/akapeo_unplugged.
